The Pros & Cons of Currency Exchange » travel

If you are planning on traveling overseas one of the things that you will encounter is the need for currency exchange. Whether you visit Europe, Canada, Mexico or Asia, you will undoubtedly need to exchange currencies. Unfortunately currency exchange can be a costly process and sometimes even be filled with scam artists. Here are some tips on the pros and cons of currency exchange

Currency Exchange the right way
If you are traveling overseas bring along your ATM/debit card. For the vast majority of places you will visit, you will be able to use your ATM and debit cards saving you the need to exchange currencies. Your ATM and debit cards usually come with the lowest fees for currency exchange so you don’t have to worry about paying commissions or getting ripped off.

Be careful where you exchange currencies at
Never exchange currencies outside of a bank or shop. You will probably be scammed, most black market currency exchangers will give you counterfeit notes or horrible exchange rates. Hotels are also not a good place to exchange currencies. They charge you very high rates and sometimes even tack on a commission fee. Airports should also be avoided. It is one thing if you need $50 bucks to get to your hotel, however shop around to exchange a large amount of money.
