If you are thinking about traveling out of the country, one of the most important travel necessities to take with you is your Passport. A passport allows you to travel to many destinations without a visa and also serves as identification. Passports are usually valid for the length of 10 years so they don’t need to be renewed as often as a drivers license. New laws now on the books will also require Americans to have a passport when traveling to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. If you are thinking of traveling out of the country, here are some tips on acquiring a passport.

Acquiring a passport is a relatively simple process, however it can take a while (about 6 weeks) for your passport to be processed or about 2 weeks for expedited service. A normal passport will cost about $97, if you would like your passport expedited and delivered in 2 weeks, you will have to pay $60 extra.

To apply for a passport, you will need to fill out a passport form that may differ based on your circumstances, bring with you an original birth certificate and show your identity by showing a previous US passport or Drivers License. You also need to bring 2 passport sized photos and the amount of money to cover any fees. Having a passport is a great way to travel abroad on the spur of the moment and have a legal document to prove your identity. You can visit the US Department of State’s web site for more information.
