One of the big family events is weddings. Weddings bring distant relatives together to share in your immediate family’s joy of marriage. If you are planning a wedding and wondering what the protocol is regarding distant relatives that are not close with your family, here are some tips.

There are two camps of thought on the issue. One popular opinion is that if you have the budget and the room to invite distant family members, by all means do so. It won’t hurt and you might enjoy having your entire family together. Many relatives aren’t usually close due to the fact that they live very far away or have demanding lifestyles and not because the personally don’t like you or your family. If you want to extend a warm reception, by all means invite those distant relatives.

The other school of thought is that if you do not have the room or the budget don’t worry about inviting distant relatives. Furthermore, it is up to you to choose who you would like to have at your wedding. There are no laws stating that certain family members have to come to your wedding. You must make a thoughtful decision and determine if it is in your best interest on who is invited to your wedding.
