Cultivating Healthy Sleep Patterns

Thinking about this topic? You have come to the right place for all the information possible.

Cultivating Healthy Sleep Patterns » new mothers

What will affect your baby’s mood and health even more than the nutrition that you give her? Sleeping will! The amount of sleep that your baby gets will affect every part of their life. This includes how she eats, interacts, and how she learns. It also affects mommy’s moods and ability to take care of her baby.

Parent-Directed Feeding (PDF) helps to combine with your baby’s sleeping patterns. It helps to provide the consistency and routine for you to be able to predict what your baby needs when he or she cries. Being confident as a mom directly comes from knowing what to do for your baby. Another great benefit is that mommy can get more rest and she will be healthier and more able to meet her family’s needs.

Expecting your baby to sleep through the night is a realistic goal, but it cannot happen without your help. Healthy, full term babies are usually able to sleep at least seven or eight hours a night when they reach 7-14 weeks of age. Babies may reach this milestone at many different ages, but usually by the time a baby is 3 months old, a PDF fed baby is sleeping through the night.

There is a method to encourage your child to learn healthy sleeping habits and it is rooted in the PDF feeding method. Using the flexible schedule, you will need to set your baby’s routine like this:

- Feeding time

- Wake time

- Nap time

After you set this routine, your child’s sleep patterns will shortly become more predictable. Do not mesh the last two and encourage your baby to fall asleep during their eating time or you will set a pattern that you will not be able to keep up. Babies know when they are sleepy, but they are not able to establish sleeping patterns for themselves and may develop bad sleep patterns on their own.

Breast or bottle-feeding does not have any affect on whether or not your baby sleeps through the night. The composition of breast milk or formula does not have any effect on whether your children establish good or bad sleeping habits.

Good sleep patterns help to produce healthier, smarter children, and should be a priority for parents.
