Speaker Placement
This article aims at providing you with all the necessary information so that you can understand more about it.
If you are planning a home theater in your home, speakers play an integral part in maximizing the audio portion of your movie. What makes home theaters systems really shine is when the sound and dialogue from DVD’s, TV or CD’s encompass you and immerse you in a realistic environment. The proper speaker placement can facilitate this immersion.
Most home theater systems have 5 or 6 channels which include; 1 center channel speaker, 1 front left speaker, 1 front right speaker, 1 right surround, 1 left surround and 1 subwoofer.
To start things off the center channel should be located in front of you, usually below or a few inches above the TV screen. Center channel speakers anchor the dialogue of a movie or TV show, so it is important that it is in relation to the characters speaking.
Front left and right stereo speakers are extremely important speakers and are usually the work horses of the home theater system. The front left and right speakers should be the same distance away from the viewer. You should form a triangle with you being one of the points and each front speaker forming another equal point. Both speakers should be as close to ear height as possible.
Surround sound speakers should not behind you as most people incorrectly think, but beside you in ear line. However a few inches behind your ear is fine, but having the speakers in the rear of you can distort the sound. Make sure that the speakers are also as close to ear height as possible.
Subwoofers are the easiest to place. Subwoofers are omni directional and do not need to be placed anywhere in specific. However for more bass, set it near the wall, where it can resonate.
