Today there are now two new entries into the DVD market. The two new DVD players are both superior to today’s DVD’s promising to give consumers a bigger bang for their entertainment dollar. However since there are two formats and no unlikely standard, these two types of DVD’s including HD DVD and Blue Ray DVD will fight it out in the marketplace until consumers decide which standard is better or more economical.
HD DVD has the advantage of also being able to play standard DVD’s. This way you can upgrade to a HD DVD and still keep your old collection. HD DVD is also a cheaper alternative to Blue Ray DVD player costing right now from $300 to $500 each. HD DVD’s are capable of holding about 30 GB of data compared to about 9 GB in today’s discs.
Blue Ray is the other high end DVD player. Blue Ray will cost a little more than HD DVD at about $500 to $1000 each, but will come standard with the new Play Station III. The advantage to Blue Ray is that it can hold much more data, at about 50 GB per disc, that is much more information than HD DVD.
