Millions of people each year suffer from allergies. Most people usually suffer from mild or moderate symptoms; however there are is a small percentage that does suffer severe allergic reactions that in some cases can be fatal. An allergic reaction is an immune response to an invading particle. Usually the particle is not harmful such as pollen, or a common protein in food, however the body over reacts and sends out histamines to combat it. Histamines can cause the discomfort associated with common allergy symptoms.
For mild allergy sufferers, the common allergy symptoms usually present are rashes, hives, itching and scratching, watery eyes, a runny nose and some congestion. For moderate sufferers, you can usually add difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. The majority of allergy sufferers usually fall into the mild and moderate category.
If you have a severe allergic reaction, it is important that you seek medical treatment immediately. Severe allergy symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling near the mouth and throat that can make it difficult to breath, dizziness, confusion, cramps, diarrhea and in the worst cases anaphylaxis which is a sudden body wide reaction that includes the above symptoms and can lead to death if not treated immediately.
