Caring for Cut Flowers

Thinking about this topic? You have come to the right place for all the information possible.

Caring for Cut Flowers » gardening

Many people receive cut flowers as a gift of love, friendship and appreciation. Since these cut flowers are usually very much revered, most people try to care for their cut flowers in order to maximize their life and beauty. Here are a few tips to care for your cut flowers.

Cut flowers should be kept in a cool, shaded environment. Although most flowers like to grow in direct sunlight and usually warm surroundings, keeping cut flowers in direct sunlight and warm air will usually cause the flowers to deteriorate quicker.

It is also important to prune and trim any cut flowers in which stems are decaying. Decaying stems or foliage can speed up the overall deterioration of the flower. Sometimes decay is caused by bacteria and can spread throughout the flowers, so you should remove any decay as quickly as possible.

Any stem that is under water when in a vase should be pruned. Usually vase water will have bacteria in it. In fact, some vase water begins to turn yellow when there are bacteria present. Remove any stems underwater and also change the water regularly so that bacteria are slower to grow and take hold of the flower. For most cut flowers, you can expect them to be in full bloom for 4 to 7 days if taken care of properly.
