If you are having problems getting a credit card, car loan or mortgage, it may not be your fault, but incorrect information on your credit report or even identity theft. There are so many things that can go wrong with your credit rating that many credit experts recommend that you keep track of your credit history and monitor your credit by requesting a credit report at least once a year.

There are so many people with credit cards today, and many of those people have more than 3 credit cards. Add in the fact that god knows how many companies are reporting payment data to the 3 main credit report agencies. You can see that there is an enormous room for errors and misinformation. An incorrect error on your report can cost you a credit card, car loan or worse a mortgage. Here are some ways to make sure that you protect yourself from credit errors.

Request a credit report once a year from the big 3 credit reporting agencies. You can request a report for usually less than $10. Check over the report very carefully. Check to see if there are errors. There are laws that require the credit reporting agency to correct these errors if you can prove to them that they were made. They must also delete negative information that is older than 7 years and bankruptcies after 10 years.

Also contact the credit reporting agencies, if you have had your identity stolen. Identity theft is big business. If your wallet has been stolen or if you have been notified that your identity has been compromised, one of the most important things to do is contact the big 3 credit reporting agency and place an identity theft alert on your name immediately. This will alert companies with a red flag that might lend money to the person that stole you identity to check for identification before proceeding.

So to keep your credit in good order, check your credit report frequently, contact them with any errors and if you are a victim of identity theft contact the reporting agencies immediately.
