Subwoofers are an extremely important part of any home entertainment center or system. The job of a subwoofer is to deliver very low frequency sounds that are categorized as bass. These sound levels are usually below 120 Hz and deep bass is usually lower than 50HZ.

Subwoofers are usually one speaker that is cube or squarish in shape. Some subwoofers point down, others point to the listener. They are made up of one woofer which is usually deeper in sound frequency as the woofer gets wider. For instance, a 12 inch woofer can usually reproduce bass better than a 9 inch subwoofer. Subwoofers are omni directional meaning that they can be placed anywhere in a room and still deliver great sound. Because bass travels mainly through solid object such as the floor, furniture and walls, you don’t have to worry about pointing it directly to you. In fact for the deepest bass, put it in the corner, it will reverberate from both walls at once.

While sub woofers vary in price and quality, generally speaking a decent subwoofer should cost over $200. These subwoofers usually are made with a wood cabinet and are at least 9 to 10 inches in size. Many computer speakers’ sets come with subwoofers, and while they are helpful are no where as strong and rich as traditional home audio sub woofers.
