One of the newest innovations in the computer world is the portable hard drive. While portable hard drives have been around for years, even decades, new designs, larger storage sizes and increased compatibility have finally made them extremely practical. Here are some tips.
Today’s portable hard drives usually come in sizes over 40 gigabytes, which is enough to store your entire music collection and many videos, including several full length motion pictures. Currently the largest sized portable hard drives are in the 200 GB range and are expected to increase in the upcoming months.
These new portable hard drives are extremely easy to use and very compatible with almost any computer through the use of USB and Fire wire connection. Some Portable hard drives even have their own power unit and can be plugged directly into a TV to play videos, show photo images and into a sound system to play music on mp3, Wav files or Microsoft media files. Some of these portable hard drives are called media drives and come with remote controls and docking stations.
While prices do vary, on the low end, a portable hard drive will cost you about $75, and on the high end, expect to spend several hundred dollars, even up to a $1,000.
