If you are looking to add excitement to your home, you should first start out with a home theater receiver. A home theater receiver is really the brains of your entire audio and video entertainment center. It not only provides hook ups for all your speakers, audio and video components, but also processes sound signals and provides the power in the form of its amplifier.

Home receivers don’t have to be expensive, while you can usually get a decent home theater receiver for about $150, most reliable home theater receivers can be purchased in the $250 to $500 range.

Home theater receivers are rated by watts and by speaker formats. For instance, most home theater receivers will either have a speaker format of 5.1 or 6.1 and watts ranging from 50 watts per channel to about 125 watts per channel. A 5.1 set up means that you can add one left and right front speakers, one center speaker, and two surround sound speakers, plus a subwoofer. The 6.1 is the same as the 5.1 except it adds capability for an extra set of surround speakers that are in stereo.

All home theater receivers are able to process surround sound signals; these signals usually fall into a variety of formats such as Dolby Pro Logic, DTS, THX and Dolby EX.
