HD DVD players stand for High Definition DVD player. Not only do they deliver better video quality, they also deliver better audio quality as well. HD DVD’s are optical discs that look like normal DVD’s except they can hold much more information. A normal DVD can hold about 4.7 GB of information; the new HD DVD can hold about 25 GB of information, enough data that they can be stuffed with high definition video, plenty of extras and enhanced audio.

HD DVD players are much more expensive than a normal DVD player costing from about $500 to about $1,000. They also are in a head to head fight with another high definition DVD player called Blu Ray. This DVD standard is fighting HD DVD for supremacy in the electronics market to be the next generation DVD player.

Because there are two formats for high definition DVD, many consumers are cautious and confused. They do not know which format will win out and probably won’t buy a DVD unit until a standard in the market place exists. While HD DVD players are high tech, offer great technology and are now available, it might be a while until there are enough movies available before consumers make a choice.
