If you are a student in college or high school, one of the many ways that a test or exam is given is with essay questions. Essay questions ask students to write a response to a question or give their opinion. Many times, essay questions are viewed as the most difficult types of test because they require lots of thought, recalling terms and ideas from memory and thinking critically.

Essay questions are very difficult to study for, they require that you read a lot and gain broad knowledge on a subject that can be time consuming and that requires you to think on many different levels. Obviously good writing skills are necessary, if you have trouble writing, make sure you sharpen your skills, usually with the help of writing clinics or a writing class.

Essays are unfortunately also very difficult to grade and can be graded with a bias. For some questions there can be no wrong or right answers and it is up to the professor or assistant to decide whether enough information and the correct information was submitted. If you have a professor that gives essay tests, make sure you focus on reading, general themes, specific terms and critical thinking elements.
