The Toy Rat Terrier is a small sized bundle of energy. These dogs are very active, are perfect for companionship and perfect for apartment living. The Toy Rat Terrier are usually less than 10 inches in height and only weight about 6 to 8 pounds. They come in many colors including tri colored, black, blue, red spots, brindle, etc. They are compact and are a tiny bit meaty in their extremities.
These dogs are lots of fun to be around and have plenty of energy to give their owners. They are also great with children and enjoy their attention. They get along ok with other dogs and should be fine with other pets. Originally bred as hunters, the Toy Rat Terrier still has good hunting instincts. They are very smart and easy to train. While they are Terriers and thus willful or sometimes head strong, these dogs can learn easily and even enjoy learning new tricks. Training and socialization should always occur as early as possible.
They are a hardy breed and generally healthy. They do suffer from several hereditary diseases, but responsible breeding has tried to minimize these effects in the last few decades. Their life expectancy is usually over 15 years old.
