These small toy dogs are similar in appearance to the Lhaso Apso and have a round face, long hair and a body that is short to the ground. Shih Tzu’s were originally bred in China and are unique looking. They are full of energy and extremely playful. They make great family pets and are good with children, other dogs and other types of pets.
The Shih Tzu comes in a variety of colors including white, black, brown, red, spotted, tri colored, etc. They usually weigh about 8 to 10 pounds and are about 11 inches in height. They do require a loving family and lots of attention or else can become mischievous and snappish.
While the apartment is probably the best setting for these dogs, they also do well in a small yard. They should be in a moderate climate, since they don’t do well in extreme temperatures.
They are generally healthy; however they do have some hereditary issues and should see the vet on a regular basis. Their life expectancy is about 15 years or more. If you are looking for a great lap dog or a dog for your small home or apartment, these dogs are loyal, affectionate and wonderful companions.
