One of the more popular terriers is the Jack Russell Terrier, these smaller terriers are full of personality, independence and pizzazz. They are extremely athletic, great at hunting and have lots and lots of energy. Most Jack Russell terriers are white with a few spots of brown or red. This dog is extremely happy, but is a handful for any inexperienced dog or terrier owner. The average height of a Jack Russell Terrier is about 10 to 12 inches and they weigh about 15 pounds.
The Jack Russell Terrier is full of energy and is a loyal dog, but has strong hunting instincts. They need lots of exercise and although many people do keep them in their apartments, they do well with big backyards or enjoying a hike with their owners on the weekends. These dogs can jump extremely high and can easily climb and scale many fences. They also love to give chase to small animals, so they should be put on a leash when walked. While they do ok with children, they are much happier on their own giving hunt or chase to small game.
They are generally a healthy breed and can live to be over 14 years old. This dog received its name from a clergyman Jack Russell who first bred it.
