English Mastiff

Thinking about this topic? You have come to the right place for all the information possible.

English Mastiff » dogs

These dogs are huge and bulky and originate from the times when the Romans were in England and used dogs in their army. This breed is possibly the heaviest of all the breeds and can easily be over 200 pounds. Their height is usually around 30 inches. They come in many colors such as tan, light brown and brindle and have a black muzzle and either black, brown or hazel eyes.

While these dogs were originally bred for their guarding abilities, today, you will find that these dogs are extremely gentle, loyal and affectionate. They are excellent for children, with other dogs and even other pets. They are very intelligent and can be trained very quickly.

The English Mastiff is not a vicious dog and will usually block an intruder instead of attacking him. They love companionship and enjoy being around their owner as much as possible. Because of their size, they should not be kept in an apartment, but a home with a large yard should be perfect. They do require activity, so make sure you walk or play with them on a regular basis. They are generally healthy and have a life expectancy of about 10 to 12 years.
