Dachshund

The Dachshund is a unique looking dog that is sometimes nicknamed the hot dog. They are much longer than tall. Dachshunds come in three sizes; usually they are either medium size, miniature size or toy size. They have three different types of coats, short haired, wiry hair and long hair. They come in many different colors including tan, yellow and brown, they can also come in two colored coats or speckled coats.
Dachshunds can range from only a few inches tall in the toy variety, to about 10 to 12 inches for the miniature and up to 14 inches for the long haired Dachshund. There weight varies, but usually under 20 pounds and for the smaller varieties about 8 to 10 pounds.
These dogs are great for the family and are quite intelligent. They are very humorists and fun to be around. Because of their intelligence, they are easy to train and are great to travel with or great dogs for the lap. While the larger dogs can use a small yard, all Dachshunds are great for apartment living. In a yard environment, they do like to dig and enjoy sniffing around.
While they are generally healthy, they do have a variety of hereditary disease including diabetes, being overweight, and spinal problems. Their life expectancy is about 12 to 15 years old.
