Border collies are small to medium sized dogs that are filled with energy, are extremely active and love to work hard from day to night. While possibly one of the smartest breeds, the Border Collie needs a task to do or will become extremely bored and depressed. The Border Collie is usually about 19 to 22 inches in height and 30 to 45 pounds. Their coats usually come in black and white and are spotted.

The best environment for a Border Collie is where they can work each day and where they have plenty of room to roam. Farms and ranches are perfect for the Border Collie, apartment life is not a good match, mainly because most owners don’t have many hours a day to give attention to these dogs.

Border collies are extremely easy to train. They are not that good with children or other animals, because they can be to domineering. A strong owner is required to handle these dogs. Border collies are extremely hardy and have relatively few health problems. They usually live to be about 12 to 15 years old. While they do not make great pets, they are possibly one of the best working dogs.
