If you are thinking about adding peripherals to your computer, forget about old types of cables and cords, switch to USB. USB makes it easy to hook up one item or ten items. USB cords are the same size and technology for all items. There are two types of standards USB 1.0 and USB 2.0, however 2.0 is backward compatible and the overwhelming majority of peripherals use 2.0.

USB is extremely fast, inexpensive and you can plug in many devices into one USB port in your computer. For instance, if you only have 2 USB ports for your computer, you can purchase an external USB port with 8 USB ports and connect this USB plug into one of your USB port, theoretically, you can buy two of these 8 USB external ports and give your computer 16 USB ports. In actuality, the number of ports you add is over 140 so you can have dozens upon dozens of devices added and working at the same time.

USB is extremely cheap and very effective. You can usually purchase a 4 or 8 port external jack for less than $20 and there is no software or drivers to load, Windows XP is already configured to accept your USB ports. If you are looking for true functionality and ease of use, check out USB.
